Just down the hill from our location along West Side Rd, overlooking Haro Strait and Vancouver Island two public agencies provide trails along the shoreline and through madrona forests.Lime Kiln Point State Park, also known as Whale Watch Park has a network of walking trails ranging from moderate to easy. The trail to the Whale-watch Overlook is wheelchair accessible as is the trail to the Lighthouse and on to the Lime Kiln Overlook via an old service road. There are displays about the local marine life and the former lime kiln operations.The San Juan County Land Bank’s Limekiln Preserve has trails connecting with those in the State Park, including a trail going down to Deadman Bay and a smaller trail making a loop next to WestSide Lake. Other trails are really old roads from the days when the lime quarries and lime kilns were in operation. Follow short side trails into the old lime quarries.Land Bank properties along Westside Road offer spectacular wildlife viewing and short loop walks. It’s a popular spot for enjoying the sunset.
